WELS Questions of Faith
- Psalm 103 - Blessing God?
- In Psalm 103:1, we are told "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!" God blesses us all the time, how do we bless God? We thank and praise Him; we worship Him, but I've often wondered , how do we bless him?
- Re-baptism
- Should my friend be re-baptized because he was first baptized as a Catholic?
- Holy Fire
- Is there any substantiation of the miracle purported by many Eastern Orthodox concerning the manifestation of Holy Fire at the tomb where Christ's resurrection is celebrated each year during Easter (or Pascha to the Orthodox)?
- Distinction Between Unneccesary And Necessary Controversies
- Please explain paragraph 15 in the Formula of Concord: Solid Declaration, "Of Articles in Controversy with Respect to the Antithesis, or Opposite Doctrine." I am unsure about the distinction between unnecessary and necessary controversies.
- Human Reason And Conversion
- Does human reason play a role in a conversion? Some people say that weighing the costs of discipleship would have impact on conversion. Could pondering whether the resurrection is plausible make a conversion more likely to happen?
- Revelation 2:10 - Faithful
- "Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life." Does this mean that if a Christian is tortured for faith in Jesus and in great pain and weakness denied Jesus she would lose salvation?
- What Constitutes Marriage?
- When are a man and a woman married in the eyes of God? What are the prerequesites? Are there differences between the denominations in this question? Were there, in all times of Christianity, wedding services?
- Comparison
- In our part of the country, there are numerous Evangelical Covenant, Brethren, Mennonite and Moravian Congregations. What are the differences in practice/belief of these churches compared to those of the Lutheran Church?
- Is Divine Love Unconditional?
- Can we really honestly say that God's love is unconditional? I believe it is unconditional, but a friend said that the condition for which God loves is only in Christ. Is God's love unconditional to everyone or only to believers?
- Rebellion
- Was the American Revolution justified? There are arguments on both sides. When the government threatens the lives of people, is it acceptable to rebel?
- Luther Blood Line
- I saw the post about the descendants of Luther on your website and wonder why you make no mention of Han's children? That is the line I am from. My great-grandfather was Anselm Luther. It is a direct male line.
- Messianic Judaism?
- What about gentile Christians who believe that Jesus is their Savior, but also adhere to orthodox Jewish laws as a matter of choice? They say that they love Jesus so much that they want to live the way he did.
- Romans 11:25,26 - Meaning?
- What is the meaning of these verses? Why?
- Sandals
- Could you please explain the custom concerning removing a sandal as mentioned in Deut 25:9 and Ruth 4:7?
- Drunkenness
- Why exactly is drunkenness a sin? I understand that it is considered an intemperate behaviour, but it would seem that the amount of drink is not the issue (as far as I know, one could drink an excess of water or some other non-alcoholic drink without sin.)
- Praying To The Holy Spirit
- Is it biblical to pray a whole prayer solely to the Holy Spirit? Could it make sense to address a prayer directly to the Holy Spirit? Why are prayers in most cases directed to the other persons of the Holy Trinity?
- Separation From God
- I know God can't leave us alone, however sin separates us from God! Please explain the separation. Can a Christian ever need to pray, "Please don't leave me alone."?
- Man-Made Laws And Marriage?
- Most states recognize common-law marriage after 7 years. Does the church recognize this? The only thing missing is a certificate from the state. Why is this certificate so important?
- Denominationalism
- Martin Luther wrote, "I ask that men make no reference to my name, and call themselves not Lutherans, but Christians." Why have Luther's denominational inheritors not grasped the sentiment in his statement? Are you a Christian or a Lutheran first?
- Reasons For Reformation
- Can you cite some names/events/doctrines/dates you would consider pivotal on the road to 1517? Or in other words, when did conditions in the Roman Catholic Church render it incapable of presenting the pure gospel message? Are they still present today?
